I'd like to thank Erin for her kind invitation for me to spend Friday evening with her and her friends. It took a while to meet up with Rosamund, Katie, and Jenn--communications lines got switched and whereas Erin and I met in the Charlottetown Mall, they met in the English lounge on campus. Still, we met up, and it was fun: A snack at A&W's (expensive but excellent root beer and onion rings), shopping (I got some leather shoes 60% off at Aldos along with dress pants and two shirts at Jack Fraser's, my school clothes shopping caught up), and then to the movies, to watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding

It was an excellent movie. From the sociological perspective, it was an entertaining explorative of a closed immigrant culture and what happens when it begins to open up. From the dramatic perspective, it describes Toula's defiantly upward arc from sullen loneliness as a waitress in the family restaurant (Dancing Zorba's) to being a fulfilled married woman. And it's just plain funny, too--spot on.

True, My Big Fat Greek Wedding's ending's happy--I expected a sudden shock, something to foil the gradual integration of Ian Miller into the Portokalos family and his marriage with Toula. But then, was there any dramatic need for the story to end other than happily? When done rightly, happiness can be much more credible than contrived tragedy ever has been, and it was done rightly.

So. I feel human again, and that's quite a nice thing to feel. Now, if only I hadn't this horrible cold.
