Some of the highest-profile news items in Toronto right now, like yesterday's shooting in the Eaton Centre that left one person dead and seven injured, and the ongoing search for Canadian Luka Magnotta after his brutal filmed dismemberment of a Chinese student in Montréal, are gruesome crime stories. One moment, ordinary people are living ordinary lives, but the next moment sees their lives--and their communities--transformed by sudden shocking violence.

I don't think that the coverage has segued into promoting any kind of fear that things are out of control. The two incidents I identified seem to be viewed as isolated instances, random eruptions of violence in a country that's otherwise quite safe. The press coverage seems to be noting that terrible things happen sometimes, but also observing that certainly doesn't mean terrible things are common.

What say you? Is my interpretation of the ongoing media environment in Canada accurate? And what's going on in your part of the world, if outside Canada you live?

Discuss.
