A windmill adorns the front lawn of Cheese Lady's Gouda. A well-renowned manufacturer of cheeses at 1423 Winsloe Road a quarter-hour's driving northwest of downtown Charlottetown, Cheese Lady's Gouda might also be the most notable artifact of Dutch Canadians on Prince Edward Island. Dutch immigration to Prince Edward Island specifically and Canada generally took off after the Second World War, as a consequence of wartime devastation and fears of overpopulation. On Prince Edward Island, even in the agricultural sector Dutch Canadian migrants and their descendants seem to have gravitated towards higher-value-added segments, for instance, cheese manufacture.
