This street sign, marking the laneway running on the western edge of the Wellesley subway station, is new. Chechalk Lane was only given this name in August 2014, taking its name from one of the two chiefs of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation who signed the 1805 Toronto Purchase. Wayne Roberts' NOW Toronto essay noting the separation of Toronto from its indigenous roots is accurate. Perhaps this is a sign of change for the better?
