As those of you who follow my Instagram and Facebook feeds know, yesterday I visited the Art Gallery of Ontario to take in Now's The Time, the exhibition of the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat. I hadn't intended to wait until the final day of the exhibition to go. It was just that things kept accumulating over time, and my scheduling kept slipping, until finally I had to decide to go.
The exhibition was interesting, but Basquiat's work is so dense with allusions unfamiliar to me that the overall effect was lost to me. I did quite like his multimedia works.
Photography of Basquiat's work was not allowed. Instead, I went to the adjoining gift shop and looked at what was for sale. There were plenty of hardcover exhibition catalogues, but there were also things like $C 180 porcelain plates, $C 32 sandals, and any number of books.
Am I right to think he would have been amused?
