  • Last evening, on the Bloor-Danforth line between the Christie and Yonge-Bloor station, a man dressed as a Harry Potter-style magician (think a deranged Dumbledore) was speaking loudly in a language I didn't know. He was carrying poster-sized pieces of cardboard framed in tin foil and covered with different things--a Chinese-language newspaper, pictures of suburban-style houses--and periodically waving them. We got off at the same station, and I took a look at one of the posters, which proclaimed him (in English) a superstar and (in Spanish) one of Peru's leading magicians.

  • Just this afternoon, between Osgoode and College stations, I shared a subway car with, among other people, a woman dressed like a slightly exhibitionist teenager: tight pink tube top, heart-shaped earrings, heavy makeup, trendy-looking sunglasses, stiletto-heeled shoes, tights. Unfortunately for the overall effect, she was easily in her 50s.
