[BRIEF NOTE] More on the Lusophone World
Sep. 4th, 2004 05:45 pmI've written previously on the growing network of cultural, political, and economic connections which are assembling an international community based on the shared usage of the Portuguese language, drawing together Portugal, Brazil, and Portugal's former colonies. Recently, Jonathan Edelstein has noted that Brazil has chosen to forgive most of Mozambique's debt.
When you visit All Africa's section on Latin American-African relations, you find interesting stories: Namibia and South Africa seeking to cultivate Brazil as a trading partner, Mozambique receiving foreign aid (debt relief, AIDS medications) from Brazil, Brazilian musicians visiting Angola. They're low-key stories, but I can't help but feel that we're beginning to see the knitting together of an interesting sort of community which will weigh heavily in the decades to come. perhaps Brazil will knit together the countries on the two shores of the South Atlantic Ocean, in much the same way that the United States brought together the countries on both sides of the North Atlantic?
