Nothing that I wrote about the upcoming American election can be as impressive as Claudia Muir's many activities on behalf of Kerry. Myself, I'm also pro-Kerry, though more because of the sentiments expressed in the Economist's recent cover article than because of anything else.

One thing I've noticed with some bemusement, though, is the increasing demonization of Texas as a source of intertwined corporate and religious evil poisoning a more normal America. There have even been comparisons between Texas and Saudi Arabia--they both have strong religious-revival movements, they both have abundant oil reserves, they both have populations slightly in excess of 20 million.

By my count, I know three Texans. All of them have struck me as normal, decent people. Yet, the identification of Texas as somehow off was made at least as early as the Eurythmics' Savage album back in 1987:

I was dreaming like a Texan girl
A girl who thinks she's got the right to everything.
A girl who thinks she should have
Something extreme.

People more knowledgeable than I in the realm of anti-Texan sentiment should comment on what the hell is going on here.
