rfmcdonaldI mentioned yesterday evening that I was listening to Le Tigre's song "New Kicks," available at their website in mp3 format here.
"New Kicks" is an entertaining piece of agitpop, built around samples from the recent antiwar and anti-Bush demonstrations in New York City. I felt chills down my spine the first couple of times that I listened to it, on the headset in Grey Region. Then I listened to the sampled speeches, and felt more than a twinge.
Black-and-white politics are always tempting. It's always fun when you can identify your enemies as unthinking enemies of democracy, as people who despise freedom, as people who must be expelled from all positions of power in order to save civilization.
I simply find it worthy of despair that both sides in the ongoing internal debate in the United States are more than willing to deploy this rhetoric as often as they have, and as often as they doubtless will in the months and years ahead.
