The Secret Garden
Nov. 1st, 2002 08:40 pmI've finished watching the early 1990's movie version of this old English children's novel, dating from 1903. It has been a long time since I've watched it, but it strikes me upon this reviewing just how sophisticated the novel--or, at least, the movie adaptation--is, thematically. The secret garden of the title is where Colin's mother died, but it is also where he comes back to life; or, rather, comes to life for the first time. The story progresses from a wet cold winter on the moors to the height of summer, as the garden is cleared and gives itself over to new life; and so on.
It's a nice movie, pleasant and relaxing.
