Profitability aside, pay phones also still have a degree of utility to people like me. So I have a certain degree of continuing resentment of their removal from our malls and office buildings and gas stations.

What I see in London increasingly is "phone box" replacements that are actually solid blocks with pay phones on one or two sides and a cash machine on one side. The ones I've seen so far don't charge for a money withdrawal, presumably the banks pay them in some way. They often also incorporate an information screen and local street map and a wireless access point.
