I'd meant to note earlier
skooshje's posting regarding his discovery of an interesting academic paper which explores the Borg, in particular the ways in which Trek's treatment of the Borg "illustrates the conflict between the twin offspring of the Enlightenment, liberal humanism and instrumental rationalism." It reminds me of Mark Kingwell noting in his Dreams of Millennium that the early Borg could be viewed as a straightforward metaphor for a globalization that respects no boundaries.
