The Barrier isn’t something we are encouraged to contemplate. When I went to look at it a few weeks ago, the first thing that struck me was its lack of interest in attracting visitors.

I have actually visited it! But it was as part of an international youth science conference held only three years after the Barrier started operation, so it was a great engineering showpiece of London at that point. I remember the design of the piers attracting attention for their Sydney Opera House-like aesthetics.

(Also, it's interesting to read that at a time when downtown Boston has been hit by the double whammy of storm-surge floods followed by frigid temperatures that froze the floodwaters solid.)
