I'd mentioned last December (that long ago?) that I was planning to get home Internet from Bell's Sympatico service, this installation scheduled for the 7th.

The installer came by rather late, 40 minutes after 5 o'clock, curiously enough just as I was getting read to leave for an Internet café. The installation of the phone line went well, as did my hooking up of a bare-bones phone and a cable splitter and the installation of the external modem (Ethernet or USB, I have both options). Phoning the technical support people last night at nine o'clock when, despite what seemed to be a successful installation, I couldn't connect, they told me that the problem was on their end, that they hadn't installed the necessary chip but would be midnight.

I tried again this morning. Imagine the glorious success that I didn't have. Also, imagine my late arrival at work.

Please, also keep in mind that the error messages I've been getting don't seem to have anything to do with the modem's connections with the network, but rather with the modem's connections to my desktop. (I'll have to try hooking up my laptop, assuming that it's powerful enough.)

I've waited seven and a half months. One more day can't be too intolerable.

Two, though.
