[NON BLOG] On Singing "Age of Aquarius"
Mar. 3rd, 2005 10:33 pmOf all the songs that I've sung at rehearsals, "Age of Aquarius"--from the 1968 musical Hair--is the only one that I hate. It isn't only the spacey New Agey lyrics.
No, my problem is with the requirements "Age of Aquarius" places on my voice. I'm a tenor, if an unpracticed one. "Age of Aquarius" requires me to sing high notes, and to sustain them for throat-achingly long periods of time. It's a song that hurts me.
When the Moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius
Aquarius
Aquarius
Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelations
And the mind's true liberation
