  • Continuing south on Spadina from the Lillian H. Smith branch, the sight of fruits in their binds intruding on the sidewalk prompted me to shop for needed groceries at Hua Sheng Supermarket, located at 293-299 Spadina. I'd never gone inside before, to see the faintly bloodied fish lying on their beds of ice chips, the yellow crabs scuttling in their tank, the quarter-aisle of tea (green tea at last), the stacks of bread. I paid, I left, I ate a bread that looked like a two-lobed baguette and tasted something fried.

  • Further south to Queen, and east to the no-name discount bookseller just down the street from the Horseshoe Tavern to buy Stephen King's On Writing for a quarter of its listed price. (I have certain aspirations, see.) [livejournal.com profile] london_calling will remember when, in Creative Writing I, Lesley-Anne recommended King's book to her students with some bemusement. I felt that at first, but as I read I was reminded that Carrie is such a wonderful teenage revenge fantasy.

  • On the streetcar heading west, hearing two teenage girls talk so quickly that their voices seemed to trill, and wondering whether they were actually communicating. I missed rather a lot in my teenage years.
