I've reposted my meditation on the Cathars to soc.history.what-if ("WI Pedro II Wins At Muret?"). The general consensus appears to be that if the Battle of Muret had ended differently, not only might we have seen the establishment of an Aragonese kingdom including Languedoc that would have evolved into a nation-state on the model of France and Spain in our history, but England (in conquering a weakened France) would be assimilated as an outlying French province and a papacy strengthened in the long run without the 14th century's period of schisms. From such small things does our particular ecumenical society come.
