rfmcdonaldFollowing up last week's post on the role that French overseas territories will play in the French referendum on the European Union constitution, Afrik.com reports that turnout is quite high.
AltaVista's convenient Babel Fish Translation service is here. Suffice it to say that yesterday's turnout in the referendum is rather higher than expected. Whether it will be enough to cancel out what seems to be an anti-constitution majority in metropolitan France is another question entirely.
Samedi 28 mai, ce sont donc près de 921 000 Français d’Outremer ou résidant sur le continent américain qui étaient appelés aux urnes. Saint-Pierre et Miquelon a vu son taux de participation exploser, passant de 18,25% aux élections européennes de 2004 à 39,11% hier... Mais il est vrai que la population du territoire n’est pas très élevée, avec 6300 habitants au total.
Les autres départements et territoires français d’Outremer où le vote a été anticipé pour cause de décalage horaire confirment pourtant cette mobilisation : la Martinique, avec 28,37% de votants, contre 17,95% en 2004 ; la Guyane, avec 23,15% de votants, contre 14,31% en 2004 ; la Guadeloupe avec 22,21% de votants, contre 15,49% l’an dernier...
Sur la matinée du dimanche 29 mai, c’est également une forte mobilisation à laquelle on assistait en France métropolitaine, puisque le taux de participation à midi (25,08%) était également supérieur de près de 10% au taux de participation à la même heure lors des élections européennes de 2004...
