Browsing Wikipedia, I happened upon an interesting article about Irish Newfoundlanders, which linked in turn to a too-brief article on the Irish language in Newfoundland. The tenth Canadian province is known in Irish as Talamh an Éisc, Irish for "land of fish," apparently one of the few places outside of Europe to have an Irish-language placename. Brian McGinn's essay "Newfoundland: The Most Irish Place Outside of Ireland" (go here for Google's cached version) has more.
