(This posting, to those of you unfamiliar with 2300AD, talks about merging four fictional RPG settings into one. So, if you're worried about being a geek, be warned and read no further.)

On the various 2300AD mailing lists, I've been talking about a crossover. Below are the four components of the crossover setting, as I currently envision it:

  • The 2300AD physical universe--stutterwarp, the location of planets, the location of alien species--more-or-less unchanged from Canon.

  • The Traveller universe's broader astropolitical scope, featuring a Vilani-dominated Ziru Sirka. The Ziru Sirka hasn't penetrated the Solomani Rim sector but has, over the 2nd and 23rd centuries, begun to slowly decline under the weight of barbarian raids and its cumbersome interstellar economy.

  • The Transhuman Space technological milieu (ubiquitous genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, a terraformed Mars, a densely-populated outer Solar System and belt).

  • And, my own Tripartite Alliance Earth alternate history, projected to 2400.

The history would follow 2300AD canon, more-or-less, with the exception of the formation of three blocs (the European Confederation, a South Atlantic Community, and a Pacific Alliance that collapses in the mid-22nd century but not before bequeathing on its successor states stutterwarp technology) and a half-dozen smaller starfaring states (Mexico, a reunified United States, one or two Indian successor states, Greater Egypt) that proceed to dominate starfaring. The Kafer War takes place, save it's the Pacific Arm that gets devastated, the weak League of Nations world government gains more power in leading a victorious coalition that includes the Sung (assimilated into human political structures) and eventually the Ylii. Following the confinement of the Kafer to the Gamma Serpentis worlds, a generation of peace follows until the Ziru Sirka, before its terminal civil war, hears about a prosperous and advanced state in the Solomani Rim that could be a useful client-state. Which the League becomes for another generation, owing to Vilani bloody-mindedness in warfare and run-down League military forces. Eventually, the Vilani protectorate collapses as the Ziru Sirka falls into a civil war involving the use of planetcracking weapons and the League slowly begins to advance into the Ziru Sirka.

Why would I want to do this? Well, because it's cool, for starters, and I like TpA (and 2300AD, and Traveller, and Transhuman Space). Too, I'd like to provide TpA characters with a science-fictional universe that they can refer to in conversation, and a 2400AD universe that combined the features of the above universes would fit nicely. Plus, I'll need something else to do after I finish the TpA website over the winter break.

So, thoughts? Should I do it?
