[URBAN NOTE] Kalupe
Aug. 18th, 2005 04:07 pmThe first time that I passed the jewellery store Kalupe (719 Queen Street West) on the streetcar, I was taken aback by what I recognized as the Latvian flag hanging from above its door. It wasn't so surprising, since Ontario is the centre of the Latvian Canadian community, even supporting a web magazine The name certainly sounded like it came from a Baltic language, but I was still curious. I was also lazy.
I went inside today as I was heading home about noontime, disembarking from the streetcar to question and yes, the store does have its roots in Latvia, with the current owner's father having come from the town of Kalupe in Latvia's easternmost region of Latgale. I didn't buy anything because of my finances, though the store does have some nice jewellery, including some items made of the famous Baltic amber.
