Over at Radio Free Europe, Jan Maksymiuk writes about the controversy surrounding historical memory in Moldova, as Moldovans question whether the 61st anniversary of the liberation of Moldova from the Nazis by the Soviets was a liberation at all. This controversy, in turn, directly impinges upon the question of Moldovan national identity since, as I blogged last year, Moldova emerged as an entity separate from Romania only because of the Soviet conquests of Bessarabia.
