[LINK] Two Language Minorities Compared
Sep. 4th, 2005 11:25 pmIn the fall 1996 issue of the Canadian Journal of Regional Studies, George J. De Benedetti and Maurice Beaudin compare the Francophones of Prince Edward Island's Prince County and the Anglophones of Québec's Gaspé peninsula "Linguistic Minority Communities' Contribution To Economic Well-Being: Two Case Studies. The authors conclude that the politicization of language in Québec has directed Anglophone energies in that province's underdeveloped peripheries from economic development to language wars, while the prosperity of the Francophones of the Région Évangéline is fragile and could be undermined by ongoing emigration and cutbacks in federal country. Even in a bilingual country like Canada, it seems, well-established language minorities remain economically marginalized.
