Right now I'm at the Lillian H. Smith Library on College near Spadina, hoping to take a look at the RPG books in the Merril Collection. En route I stopped off at the University of Toronto's discount textbook store on 229 College Street, looking at surplus copies of The Iliad, urban sociology texts, and analyses of Europe's Great Powers in the long nineteenth century as David Bowie's "Suffragette City" boomed out of the adjoining Einstein Café.

It's been a year and a month since I submitted my last academic essay, completing my requirements for my Master of Arts (English) from Queen's University. I miss academe. Perhaps, perhaps more accurately, I miss the ideals of academe, the idea of a life of the mind disconnected from the outside world. The trouble is that this kind of hermetically sealed-off existence never worked for me, almost certainly to my benefit. Who said that nostalgia has to be accurate, after all?
