I was pleased to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] acrabtree and L. for an enjoyable afternoon spent discussing such spoilers-filled things as the metaplots of Babylon 5, eating sushi, and browsing one used bookstore run by Larouchites.

[livejournal.com profile] acrabtree raises the possibility that abundant bacterial life in various marginal planetary ecologies--on Titan, Mars, and elsewhere--might managed to evolve into sophisticated, even sentient, collective organisms. Combine this with David Brin's suggestion that most Earth-like worlds have more water than Earth and that sophont species tend to be aquatic, and you might have a future where humans form a sort of middleman minority, convenient intermediaries capable of transporting materials and information from one world to the next.
