[BRIEF NOTE] Pervez Musharraf is a jerk

rfmcdonaldIt's worth noting that President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan is an insensitive jerk for his allegations that Pakistani women claim rape just so they can get asylum in Canada. Yes, he has said it: Check Exhibits A, B and C.
Why make a point of noting this? Partly because I was invited to a Googlebombing, I admit, but I wouldn't have accepted the invitation if I wasn't outraged by his statements. Rape per se is a crime, in many ways as much a crime of power as a crime of sexuality. It is entirely right to say that women (and men, too) who complain about their rapes are concerned about the unchecked power imbalances which allow this crime to happen. Rape should never be accepted as a quotidian event, or a tolerable event. People who think that people complaining about rape should shut up, whether out of an ill-placed sense of pride in one's community or a desire to keep those unchecked power imbalances in place, should be revealed as the insensitive jerks that they are.
