Last night I joined [livejournal.com profile] acrabtree, [livejournal.com profile] larkvi and [livejournal.com profile] schizmatic for a pleasant viewing session of Babylon 5, catching the episodes "A Spider in the Web", "Soul Mates", "A Race Through Dark Places" and "The Coming of Shadows". It's quite true that Season 2 is much better than the first,

It's monumentally unsurprising to find that the Earth Alliance is competent in all the wrong things: bad at basic security procedures, good with telepathic cyber-zombie technologies. The Psi Corps is clearly off, not only as demonstrated by Talia's unnerving recitation with a smile of how she was taken away from her parents at five and was given over to the care of a steward for a year, but by the very serious problems of the Psi Corps with basic human rights. It's worth noting that the Romanian Securitate recruited heavily from orphanages, since orphans deprived of normal human relationships could be made to do anything a suitably ruthless organization wanted.

What can be said about "The Coming of Shadows" that hasn't already been said? Brilliant episodes, with enough pathos and hope and horror and doom to keep me entertained. JMS deserved that Hugo.
