Balkans Crisis Report #578 at IWPR, put online the 5th of this month, is a special on the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The other autonomous province of the Republic of Serbia, Vojvodina is a historically prosperous and multiethnic territory that has suffered heavily from the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. With Serbia's rapprochement towards the European Union, this currently very depressed province might be on the verge of an economic boom--the much richer Hungary and Croatia are just next door, and Vojvodina is arguably part of that fast-integrating region of central Europe. Then again, the continuing debate over the future status of Vojvodina and the rise of violent Serb-nationalist street gangs are rather discouraging.
