talktooloose for brunch at Dooney's Café (511 Bloor Street West) this afternoon. A cafe known for its brunches, Dooney's apparently gained became a community institution in the Annex after its successfully warded off a takeover by Starbucks in the mid-1990s. I'd drunk tea and assorted other beverages there before, but I never actually ate anything. I was curious, though, and I was hungry, and Dooney's was full with it Sunday brunch crowd.

talktooloose managed to arrive--an omelette with wild mushrooms and scallions, with sides of fruit and toast--just as he came in. The food was, I was pleased to discover, actually very good: The omelette was tasty, the fruit was fresh, and the toast was, well, toast. It was only the little things that seemed lacking, like the short-staffing that let me sit for ten minutes without a server coming buy, or the fact that the toast wasn't hot enough to melt the butter that I patted on.
Would I go to Dooney's again to eat? Certainly. I think that I might want to avoid their Sunday brunch crowd, though.
