I caught Serenity, Joss Whedon's first movie and the continuation of the popular Firefly television series, at Rainbow Cinema's Market Square location with [livejournal.com profile] finfin this afternoon. I'd heard a lot about Serenity through various of my friends, speakers of a strange specialized argot: "Alliance," "Mal," "Serenity," "the Reavers." The fact that so many people I knew were fervent fans of the series suggested that something was up. The only thing that I had to wonder about was whether or not subliminal programming was involved.

As it happens, I quite enjoyed myself. I'll be following up on my spoilers-content problems with the movie in my next post, but Joss Whedon should be commended for the way he managed to quickly introduce the crew of the Firefly-class Serenity to people like me who knew next to nothing about the Firefly series. Whedon's good at doing things like this, even without inflicting massive amounts of suffering and anguish upon the characters he convinces us to love. The plot was straightforward space opera, standard quest mythos, but Serenity had a fairly innovative and compelling take on the space opera.

Serenity isn't going to achieve a mass audience. Without DVD sales and the like, it may not even recoup its investment. The fact that the small theatre where [livejournal.com profile] finfin and me watched it, seating five or six dozen people, was almost entirely full says enough about its quality. If subliminal programming was involved, it was damned good subliminal programming.
