We had a rather fun session of roleplaying in the World of Darkness under the direction of [livejournal.com profile] acrabtree. By "fun," it should be noted, I mean "decidedly disturbing and vaguely unsettling." Toronto in that unfortunate uchronia where the human universe is secretly directed by the undying dead and not-alive is uncomfortable, especially when you come upon massively exsanguinated corpses in locked rooms which then disappear just as the police come. What's more worrisome is that my character is the only one of the four whose life hasn't yet been ruined by the GM's fiat. I fear for Malcolm's sake.

I'd a chat with [livejournal.com profile] larkvi in his car on the way home after I mistakenly likened the feel of the game universe to cyberpunk. On reflection, I recognize that I'm entirely wrong, that the relative roles of the state and private enterprise and civil society are different across the board. What the World of Darkness and cyberpunk at its best do share was a sense of the human universe as unaccountable, as dominated the same unaccountability, the same impenetrable acronymic organizations and cults. What these worlds need, desperately, are ombudsmen.
