This unsourced essay on the French Canadian presence in and migration to what is now the American Midwest over the 19th century does provide interesting background on the French Canadian presence in this area. I made another post back in September on the fate of the Francophones of "Upper Louisiana".

So much of my interest in diasporas, and in history, stems from my interest in the fate and development of the different Francophone communities of North America. In their developments, I've always fancied that you can trace the outlines of a much larger nation, something vaster and greater than Québec and Acadia combined, a true contender.
