I eat Japanese food mainly for the aesthetic thrills. Taste does enter into it, especially for sushi, but not that much. The arrangement of the bentô lunch on the ceramic plate, or the semi-circle of sushi by the California rolls, is pleasing to the eye.

This evening I ate at Natural Sushi, on Yonge two blocks south of Bloor, yet again. The waitress was awkward, forgetting my tea and joking about the interest rate on my credit card when I went to pay, but I felt generous and left the standard tip. I'm sure that there are better Japanese restaurants in downtown Toronto, but Natural Sushi has the merit of being the first place where I encountered Japanese food solo. What's wrong with nostalgia as such, especially when it provides real returns?

I felt calm when I left Natural Sushi at 25 past 7 and looking south down the street, the headlights of cars in a wan yellow line between the buildings. I've had worse days.
