nhw's
enthusiastic review (spoilers) of
George RR Martin's latest,
A Feast for Crows, makes me curious about the book, not least because Martin apparently does describe the corrosive effects of years of sustained high-casualty war on the little people, i.e. everybody. Too often, science fiction and fantasy neglect this. Even on good television shows like
Babylon 5, massive casualty figures too often serve as backdrops against which major characters can react--the shot of a certain character watching the orbital bombardment of a certain planet comes to mind--rather than as horrors in their own rights.
