Star Trek: Nemesis
Dec. 17th, 2002 09:42 pmI saw the film of the title at its 6:30 showing, in the company of taem and his friend Danny. My thoughts:
- I liked the rough draft of the script I linked to better than the movie that I actually saw. Hopefully the script's better bits--B-4's long spiel about his origins, Riker's "Don't worry, hell is dark"--were dropped and will reappear on the DVD.
- The Romulans constitute a cool civilization, tragically underused by Star Trek particularly in comparison with the monotonously violent Klingons. It was good to see them in the movies at last.
- Deanna Troi is also a very cool character; and yes, I agree with Kalev that Marina Sirtis is much more attractive now than she was in the first few seasons of the actual show.
- We three all agreed that the battle between theEnterprise, the Scimitar, and the Romulan warbirds which came to our side's aid, was one of the best space battle scenes ever.
- Alas, there are notable resemblances to Spock's lost katra and eventual restoration with Data and B-4. Fortunately, though, it doesn't seem like there will be a straightforward reset if Data's death, if ever there will be. B-4 might be (in a weird way) Data's direct descendant, but he won't ever be Data.
So. I'm not as positive about the movie as ebeloic, but I do think it rates in the top three or four Star Trek films, alongside First Contact and The Wrath of Khan.
