Over at soc.history.what-if, I wondered why, uniquely among all of the colonial nations of early-modern western Europe, England was unique in sending huge numbers of pioneer immigrants across the Atlantic. The general consensus seems to be that England's uniquely tumultuous history, with multiple civil wars and widespread religious dissidence, was responsible. Might a stable Tudor succession--Elizabeth marries and has children, or Henry VIII has a son who lives?--have aborted the rise of the proto-United States?
