The Ben Liebrand mashup of the vocals of Michael Jackson's brilliant 1982 "Billie Jean" with the instrumentals of Europe's iconic 1986 hit "The Final Countdown" has become one of my favourite songs in the space of a day.

There's something about mashups when they're good that gets me, the wonderful juxtaposition--recreation, even--of the familiar in ways that bring insight onto the originals. What makes a song tick? The proper mashup can illustrate this.

The pairing of Madonna's "Hung Up" with its original, ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", is entertainingly obvious and yet also entertaining.

  • Via [livejournal.com profile] dsgood, the perhaps unsurprising news that humpback whales are language-using creatures: "Researchers have now mathematically confirmed that whales have their own syntax that uses sound units to build phrases that can be combined to form songs that last for hours. Until now, only humans have demonstrated the ability to use such a hierarchical structure of communication."

  • Kylie Minogue's live performance in 2003 of the mashup "Can't Get You Out of My Head" is available here for download in mp3 format. It's catchy.

Whoever it was who made a mashup of the music of Visage's 1982 British hit "Fade to Grey" and the vocal track of the late great Michael Jackson's "Bad" deserves to be commended. Put together, the music and the vocals work quite well as a despairing sort of cry.
