I used three different writing samples to make sure I got as much out of that meme as I could. Using the text Running With Scissors review, I was told I write like H.P. Lovecraft. (Atlantic Canada is like New England?)

I write like
H. P. Lovecraft

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Using my own text in the post on people's problems with Twitter and Karelia and Stratfor, the program told me I write like Isaac Asimov. (Would Asimov be a blogger?)

I write like
Isaac Asimov

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I will opt for the Asimov--less unsettling that way--although I will confess to being disappointed that I do not write like Margaret Atwood.

The "25 Things" meme that has been propagating throughout Facebook and the world, and has been receiving its fair share of comment. Salon's Robert Lanham confessed how, after finding "25 Things" inane, on closer examination he found many: funny, touching, insightful, while the title of the article of Time's Claire Suddath ("25 Things I Didn't Want to Know About You") pretty much says it all. More neutrally, Amy Harmon at the New York Times blog The Lede touched on the difficulties surrounding this meme.

Some Facebook critics condemn the activity--or even commenting on it--as an exercise in narcissism. Others say the Facebook-fueled disclosures draw far-flung friends closer than they ever would be otherwise and, sometimes, make for a good laugh.

It does seem to beat sending each other pretend cocktails (another preoccupation of Facebook’s 150 million users). But most everyone agrees it is taking up an inordinate amount of time. "People,’’ said Dr. Fogg, "are thinking very carefully about their lists."

The more popular your Facebook persona, the logic goes, the more you will be able to get your Facebook friends to read your blog or buy your book or support your cause. But crafting one is a delicate process, especially condensed in list-form.

How to exalt your achievements while appearing humble? How to convey your essential originality while coming off as reassuringly familiar? How to illuminate without oversharing?

Harmon then goes on to kindly provide a template for people who'd like to take part in "25 Things" but aren't quite sure how to be original.

One particularly insightful observation came from Joe. My. God, who noted that this sort of meme was quite common in the blogosphere years ago--it might have been a list of 100 things, but blogs clearly have the drop on Facebook. Back before this blog became what it was, back when it was much more a journal than a blog, I myself was an enthusiastic participant in these memes, back in 2004, 2003, 2002 even. So was everyone else I knew on Livejournal.

Wow. I'm a first adopter. That makes me feel special.

"2008 Presidential Candidate Matching Quiz"

I'm surprised that I rated Hillary Clinton so highly, but it's her cold technocratic style that's the issue for me. (For further reading, see David Olive's article in today's Sunday Star, "Baggage factor afflicts Hillary's campaign". Yes, Luke, you were right about her.) If he can pull it off, an Obama presidency--perhaps with Edwards as vice-president?--would be pretty much a best-case scenario. That it would help break the emerging dynastic pattern in American politics would be a plus, everywhere. Then again, this commentary comes from a Canadian citizen who doesn't possess any voting rights whatsoever in a single one of the United States, so take this for what you will.

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list, and some of the people in the wider blogosphere. Some people I know relatively well. (Some I know too well. ha!) I read your journals, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." (Think of it as your Christmas present to me! lol)

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear. C'mon I've got 256 Livejournal friends on top of an unknown number of people outside of Livejournal. Surely some of you can answer this, yes?

I first heard about the death of Princess Diana late at night, very early on the morning of the 1st of September. I was insomniac, wiorried about my first day as a first-year student at the University of Prince Edward Island, and flipping through the television channels. I got to the block of French channels and one of them--TV5?--was showing images of a car crash in Paris, something about ... I couldn't concentrate enough to listen, and I didn't understand why international news channels werre covering a car crash in Paris, and so I turned off the television and finally went to sleep.

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

I'm pleased with this result since I like Babylon 5's Marcus Cole despite his character's occasional whinge of tweeness.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] agirlnamedluna for getting me started.

1. How powerful do you think the medium of blogging is?Quick answer? )

2. How far would you be willing to go to get a job? I mean in means of changing yourself, hiding things, etc. Well ... )

3. How much do you read a day/week to keep your blog up-to-date? What are the things you focus on, which sources do you discard? This is actually a tough question. )

4. You're allowed to intervene in only three issues in the world, any issues. What do you change and why?Which ones? Well, since you've not limited the scope ... )

5. You're allowed one power - which one will you take?Power. Ooh. )

If anyone has some questions they'd like to ask me, go ahead.

It's more properly, as [livejournal.com profile] nhw notes, "how many people's friends lists are you on," but there one goes.

Well? )
