- Over at The Globe and Mail, Wen Liao suggests ("The dragon's NIMBY concerns are central to its expanding orbit") that China is in the process of expanding its influence throughout the Indian Ocean basin, trying to stabilize the region, prevent other regional powers like India and Russia from becoming challengers, and channeling investment and arms sales and the like towards its partners. "And?" I'm tempted to say, "So what?" China's just behaving like other great powers, and arguably more constructively than many.
- The Toronto Star's Bill Schiller examines ("Gay film festival keeps low profile" the struggles faced by organizers of a GLBT film festival in Beijing. It seems that the Chinese government prefers expressions of gay identity to be private, away from the public sphere.
