The Okuda San Miguel mural Equilibrium, painted on the east side of the Parkside Student Residences at Carlton and Jarvis, looks quite fine in the morning. The TTC streetcar passing east made this a scene I had to capture.

After seven years of vacancy, the Maple Leaf Gardens building on Church and Carlton that had once housed the home area of the Toronto Maple Leafs became a Loblaws grocery store in 2011. Because of its size and its storied location, Loblaws 60 Carlton is arguably one of the chain's flagship stores. Because of its location on Church Street, Carlton Street in fact being one of several possible southern termini of Church and Wellesley, the store's merchandise is also regularly tricked out in the rainbow colours of Pride when this season comes about.

Late in the fall of 2016, in November, I took these three photos of a streetcar assigned to the 506 Main Street route approaching me as it advanced east on Carlton Street.

Grace Toronto Church, from the rear

After visiting Allan Gardens late Tuesday afternoon, I passed by the adjacent building of Grace Toronto Church, on the southeast corner of Jarvis and Carlton. The building was all aglow, warmly lit against the background of the descending night and the cold-looking towers.

Neil Young, "Varsity"

I was surprised by the name I saw inscribed in the lower right corner of this painting. Was this the Neil Young whose work was being displayed in the lobby of the Holiday Inn on Carlton at Yonge? No. Some quick Googling revealed that this work, "Varsity", was the product of a different Neil Young.

The TTC streetcar shelter at Yonge and Carlton, opposite College Park, saw some vandalism late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, when someone broke a panel of glass in the shelter all over the street and sidewalk.

One of the nice things I like about festivals like WorldPride is that entire streets are closed off, allowing people unexpected vistas. I took two photos of the view south on Church towards Carlton, the first below with my regular camera and the second with my new smartphone. I lean towards preferring the first, myself; it feels more intimate, closer up.

During my December 2012 visit with my father to Loblaws 60 Carlton--the grocery store built in the former Maple Leaf Gardens--I saw this scale model of the building its current state advertising the store's cooking school.

The Maple Leaf Gardens, located at 60 Carlton Street just minutes' walk east of the College subway station and south of Church and Wellesley, is a national icon. Home for decades to the Toronto Maple Leafs, a decade after Toronto's NHL hockey team played its final game Canadian grocery chain Loblaws finally implemented its plans to convert the ground floor of the Gardens into a grocery store, Loblaws 60 Carlton. (Ryerson University uses the remainder of the space for its Mattamy Athletic Centre.)

Loblaws 60 Carlton consistently gets good reviews, receiving four stars on Yelp. There has been some concern in the neighbourhood about the impact of such a large store on the smaller stores of the neighbourhood--see Andrea Houston's Xtra! article published just before Loblaws 60 Carlton's opening in November 2011 and Tyrone Newhook's Xtra! article published one year later, both of which seem to report some impact, admittedly in economically harsh times. When I visited the store earlier this month with my father, I was again impressed not only by the store's size but by its excellent organization and displays. Nine pictures follow.
