The National Post's Emma Dillabough reports on the photography of Islander Stephen Desroches, whose photography of the Island winter has been viral.

More than a dozen school days have been lost to the worst winter any Islander can remember — including three days this week after almost a metre of snow fell between March 13 and Monday alone.

School have stayed closed well after the snow stopped. The roads have become tunnels; often, there is only one car width plowed, making it impossible to pass (or wait for a school bus). Every corner has become a blind corner.

To capture the scene on camera, Mr. DesRoches has intentionally gone out at night, for safety’s sake. He was rewarded with a striking image of a road flanked by snowbanks reaching into a star-filled sky.

‘‘The midnight sky image was created around 1 a.m. near French River. I was out exploring the back roads during a time when traffic was low. With so many blind corners, vehicle headlights add an extra level of comfort to see oncoming traffic. My only goal for the image was to try and illustrate the volume and scale of the snow under a star covered sky. I had been waiting for a cloudless night for a few days.’’
